Could Chargers Could Land Former AFC West All-Pro Safety in Free Agency?

The Chargers could do well by adding this all-pro safety.

Every offseason begins with the purging of rosters due to cap hits. While most teams don't have to let their star players leave, others make bad deals, resulting in seeing star talent walk out the door.

One such team is the Denver Broncos, who just cut All-Pro safety Justin Simmons. Simmons's exit from the team has everything to do with the bad the Broncos made to secure Russell Wilson, who they are also cutting.

This huge cut could benefit the Los Angeles Chargers greatly. There is something sweeter about getting a player from a divisional rival, and the secondary needs a ton of help this offseason.

Simmons could help to bolster a unit that underperformed all last season. Alohi Gilman could be a cap room hit, leaving the door open for Simmons.

Simmons and Derwin James Jr. could be a secondary duo that would strike fear into opposing offenses. The issue is the Chargers are dealing with their own cap issues right now.

The good news is there are multiple players that the team can cut and restructure to allow enough wiggle room to bring in a player like Simmons.

Simmons ended the season with 70 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 3 interceptions, and eight passes defended.

Few are as good as Simmons, and he would bolster anyone's secondary immediately. The Chargers need physicality and toughness, and Simmons has that and more.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh might have seen the news of Simmons's release and subsequently have started making calls to secure his services. Again, it would be even sweeter if the Chargers took a player from their biggest divisional rival.
