5 Way-Too-Early Predictions for Indianapolis Colts Defense

The Indianapolis Colts had a solid defense in 2022 and look to continue with high-energy, new players and rookie talents.

Last season wasn’t a fun one for the Indianapolis Colts.

However, the defense typically played consistently, alert, and at times, won the entire game with their performances.

Despite that notable names like cornerback Stephon Gilmore (now with the Dallas Cowboys) and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (currently a free agent) are heading elsewhere during the offseason, the Colts drafted well enough on defense to fill the gaps.

With such a new look for Gus Bradley’s department, it’s time to give five predictions/milestones that could happen in 2023. As with the offense, the defense must be accounted for.

To start will be the entire defense but with a focus on the defensive trenches.

Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (99) and Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo (54) work to bring down Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Sanders (26) on Sunday, Nov. 20, 2022, during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart (90) celebrates after a stop Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, during a game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Oct 30, 2022; Indianapolis, Indiana, USA; Indianapolis Colts linebacker Shaquille Leonard (53) celebrates his interception with teammates in the second half against the Washington Commanders at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Nov 13, 2021; Manhattan, Kansas, USA; Kansas State Wildcats defensive back Julius Brents (23) celebrates the tackle of West Virginia Mountaineers running back Leddie Brown (4) during the third quarter at Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports
Oct 6, 2022; Denver, Colorado, USA; Indianapolis Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II (23) breaks up a pass intended for Denver Broncos tight end Andrew Beck (83) in the third quarter at Empower Field at Mile High.

Outlook

The Colts have nowhere to go but up in 2023. The defense has a great mind, like Bradley leading the charge, as well as multiple new weapons added in free agency and the draft. Could the above predictions come true? It’s too early to tell. But it’s not out of the question with the potential that this defense has.
