Redskins fail to score TD for 3rd straight game, fall 24-9 to Bills

The Washington Redskins tried their best to earn a victory in rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins' first career start. Even with the change under center, forced by Case Keenum's concussion suffered last week, things remained too much the same. Washington was only able to score field goals for their third-straight game, and their first-half defense did nothing to help the situation. In the end, their trip to Western New York will send them packing yet again, falling to 1-8 on the season by virtue of a 24-9 defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bills.

Haskins went 15 for 22, and after throwing four interceptions in two games of relief action, didn't turn the ball over a single time when he actually had some practice snaps. After the game, head coach Bill Callahan failed to announce the starter for the next game, but with nothing to play for it makes little sense for the team to return to Keenum and rob Haskins of the developmental opportunities. The game surely didn't look too big for him on this day, though there were some opportunities missed.

With a bye in Week 10 ahead, Washington will go at least one full month without scoring a touchdown, their last being on October 13 against the Miami Dolphins. With the Dolphins close to earning their first victory of the season and already having their bye, Washington will technically be in the second slot for the 2020 draft order.

The Bills' defense turned in a phenomenal second-half performance after allowing RB Adrian Peterson to have a huge first half. Peterson ran for 101 yards in the first half but just seven in the second half for 108 total. The secondary was able to lock down rookie receiver Terry McLaurin, focusing on the third-round Ohio State product. A leading candidate for offensive rookie of the year hauled in just four catches for 39 yards.

Defensively, rookie Montez Sweat contributed one of the team's two sacks, while embattled corner Josh Norman - who was in trade rumors through Tuesday's deadline - forced a fumble.

Overall though, the defense wasn't able to do much to impact the game, as Buffalo scored on their first possession of the game on a short throw to WR Cole Beasley off the hands of quarterback Josh Allen. The second-year starter had a 110.4 rating on his 14-for-20 afternoon, collecting 160 yards through the air.

Washington will return home and take the week off before next taking on the 1-7 New York Jets, who found a way to lose to the Dolphins.
