Kyler Murray Update: Cardinals 'Secret' Starting QB vs. Commanders?

Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon shared an update on the team's quarterback situation. They face the Washington Commanders in Week 1.

If the Arizona Cardinals are any closer to resolving their quarterback issues, they don't plan on tipping their hand ahead of Week 1 when they play the Washington Commanders

After cutting veteran quarterback Colt McCoy on Monday (and after keeping rehabbing Kyler Murray on PUP, making him unavailable for Week 1) Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon spoke of the team's situation under center. Gannon said he won't name the team's starter ahead of Sept. 10 in hopes of giving his team an edge against Washington.

"I'm not going to name a starter because I think it's a competitive advantage for us going to Washington," Gannon said. "We'll know who the starter is."

Gannon is entering his first season as Arizona's head coach. He was previously the Philadelphia Eagles' defensive coordinator for two seasons (2021-2022).

Despite not having plans to publicly name a starting quarterback, it's known the race will come down to rookie Clayton Tune and Joshua Dobbs. Arizona traded a fifth and seventh-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for Dobbs on Thursday.

Dobbs has bounced around multiple teams since being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018. He finally made the first two starts of his NFL career last season with the Tennessee Titans. Dobbs threw for 411 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions and Tennessee was 0-2 in his starts.

Tune, who played at Houston, was taken in the fifth-round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Cardinals. In his final collegiate season, he threw for 4,074 yards, 40 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

In three preseason appearances, Tune was 34 of 59 for 353 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Washington hosts the Cardinals on Sept. 10 at 1 p.m.
