Commanders Coach Target Mike Macdonald Interviewing with Seahawks; Bidding War?

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald became the overnight favorite to land the Washington Commanders job but may be headed to a different one on Wednesday.

When Ben Johnson chose to return to the Detroit Lions as their offensive coordinator instead of taking the Washington Commanders' head coaching job it cast things into a bit of unexpected chaos.

Then, Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik accepted a new deal with that franchise to return and we don't think it's a coincidence it happened at the same time the Commanders were likely shifting their focus to a new top candidate.

Much to the dismay of the crowd that wants Washington to hire an offensive coach to be its new leader those developments left only defensive coaches available that have been interviewed by the franchise.

And the top candidate on that list may become unavailable very soon.

"The Seahawks are bringing in Ravens DC Mike Macdonald today for a second interview for their head coaching job," NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday. "Seattle met with Macdonald, 36, on Tuesday in Baltimore. Now, he's going through the expanded process they did with other candidates."

For the Commanders, the fact the Seahawks are flying Macdonald out just one day after meeting him in Baltimore isn't a good sign if the coach is indeed at the top of their ever-shrinking list of candidates.

Furthermore, if Macdonald ends up staying in Seattle to take that job Washington would then be the last team remaining.

Of the remaining candidates Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn could be the most desirable target given his history as a coach and success in his current position.

Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Ravens assistant head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver also remain in contention.
