Washington Commanders Defense Looking To Stop New York Jets' 'Really Good Running Game'

Something has to give when the New York Jets offense faces the Washington Commanders' defense.

The movable object will meet the stoppable force when the Washington Commanders' defense and the New York Jets offense share the field.

Washington's (4-10) defense is dead last in points allowed per game (30.2), while the Jets (5-9) are 30th in points scored per game (14.4). Any boost New York hoped to get to its offense was extinguished when it ruled quarterback Aaron Rodgers out for the season after they were eliminated from playoff contention with a 30-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins

While the Jets' offense has struggled, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera lauded their ability to run the ball despite them being 30th in rushing yards per game (85.1).

“They do have a really good running game," Rivera said. "They try to control the pace and tempo. It's not like they're trying to go a hundred miles an hour. They're slowing the pace down. I think the thing that they're trying to do is just be very steady with their game. But to me it, it really starts with their running game.”

Hall has paced the Jets' rushing attack, running for 637 yards and two touchdowns this season. Washington's rush defense is in the middle of the pack, allowing the 12th most yards per game (119.7).

Through the air, the Jets are 30th in passing yards per game (170), while the Commanders have allowed the most passing yards per game (264.8). Overall, New York is last in total yards per game (255.1), while Washington's defense has allowed the most yards per game (384.5).

New York will likely be without quarterback Zach Wilson due to a concussion he suffered against the Dolphins. If Wilson is unable to play, Trevor Simian would be in line to make his first start of the season.

The Commanders face the Jets on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium.
