Commanders Free Agency Decisions: Splash Signing or Stick With Sam Howell?

The Washington Commanders have several decisions to make this offseason, but none more important than deciding what to do at the quarterback position.

The Washington Commanders and the quarterback position have not seen eye to eye over the last decade, and last season saw three different quarterbacks rotate through Scott Turner's offense.

With Carson Wentz now cut and Taylor Heinicke thought to be entertaining free agency, that leaves soon-to-be second-year quarterback Sam Howell as the team's "default" starter.

So, should Ron Rivera and Martin Mayhew stick with Howell or make a "splash" in free agency?

For some reason, the Commanders are already OUT on Lamar Jackson without even as much as a meeting which baffles the mind.

With Derek Carr now with the New Orleans Saints and the franchise seemingly out on Lamar, where does that leave Washington?

Jimmy Garoppolo has yet to be courted, so he could be an interesting option.

But...

Any potential free agent signing costs a significant amount of money, but with Howell, he is still on his rookie contract, and after next year, he still has two seasons remaining.

He will earn just $4,021,600 throughout the duration of his contract, which means that should Washington stick with Howell, they can add pieces around him for the next two seasons.

On the other hand, the Commanders don't know precisely what Howell "is" as a starting quarterback. Are they better off using this upcoming season to discover what they have in Howell?

Or is the chance to sign a player like Garoppolo too good to pass up?

These questions need answering from the front office and could ultimately decide the franchise's fate for the short and long term.
