Commanders WR Jahan Dotson 'Truly Excited' for QB Sam Howell

Washington Commanders receiver Jahan Dotson is giddy with excitement in anticipation of playing alongside Sam Howell next season.

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell is getting a chance to establish himself as the starter next season...and Jahan Dotson can't wait.

The receiver had a decent rookie campaign, totaling 523 yards and seven touchdowns from 35 receptions and is looking at improving on his output.

But despite only seeing Howell play one regular-season game last year (Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys), Dotson, who spoke on 106.7 The Fan and is ready to roll with the soon-to-be second-year quarterback.

"That's my guy. I keep using the word excited because I am truly excited," Dotson said. "I can't wait for the opportunity for Sam (Howell). You know, he had a different rookie year than I did.

"He got to sit back and learn the ropes of the NFL through two very good veterans in his room, in Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke. I know he's ready for the opportunity. He has all the talent in the world."

So Howell gets Dotson's vote to be the starter next season, but nothing is guaranteed.

Head coach Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy stated that Howell would get the opportunity to compete for the starting job, but the pair stopped short of guaranteeing it.

But why?

The Commanders could be a big player in free agency, and when it comes to the quarterback position (an area needing significant improvement), there are plenty of options.

Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Geno Smith lead the way at the top of the free agency class, and the Commanders could view either of the trio as a viable option.

But if the franchise passes on making a big "splash" in the market, then they could opt to stick with Howell, and going by Dotson's comments, that will be just fine.
