WATCH: Commanders Rookie RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. Scores First NFL TD

Chris Rodriguez Jr. has struggled in his rookie year, but the Washington Commanders running back has scored his first career touchdown.

Today is a big day for Washington Commanders running back Chris Rodriguez Jr.

The sixth-round pick from Kentucky scored his first NFL touchdown against the New York Jets on Sunday. Here's a look at the play ...

Chris Rodriguez Jr.

During the draft process, Eric Bieniemy wanted a specific type of running back, which happened to be Rodriguez, and coach Ron Rivera detailed that when it was Washington's turn to pick, it was Rodriguez who stood out from a scheme point of view.

"We were looking for a back that fit what we wanted to do and the way we wanted to do it," Rivera said. "I know Eric [Bieniemy] really liked Christopher [Rodriguez Jr.], so that was one of the pluses for when he was available when we were picking."

Rodriguez has conceded carries to second-year running back Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson.

But with Robinson sidelined with an injury and Gibson nearly finished with his rookie contract, more opportunities could arise for the rookie out of Kentucky.

The Commanders trail 21-7 against the Jets.
