Cowboys Ex Hired To Help Coach Kellen Moore with Eagles

Former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore continues to fill out his new staff with the Philadelphia Eagles, taking a former Cowboys coach with him.

Until further notice, the Philadelphia Eagles remain the biggest threat to the Dallas Cowboys and their attempt to repeat as NFC East champions. If they intend on making a deep playoff run, there’s a solid chance beating Philadelphia will be necessary.

However, the Eagles won’t be the same team that collapsed in 2023 under the weight of Super Bowl expectations and a stagnant coaching staff. They made two widely supported moves in hiring veteran defensive mind Vic Fangio to run the defense and Kellen Moore to be the offensive coordinator.

Moore, notably, spent his coaching career with Dallas before a one-year stint as the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers. After the coaching staff was dismissed, Moore quickly found himself a new job and now will be tasked with taking down his former team.

On Saturday, Philadelphia hired Doug Nussmeier, a former Cowboys assistant coach, to be its quarterbacks coach, per Jeremy Fowler. He’ll work closely with Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts as they attempt to mesh last year’s offense with Moore’s philosophy.

Nussmeier followed Moore from Dallas to Los Angeles, and now to Philadelphia. His longest tenure, though, was with the Cowboys. He was the tight ends coach from 2018–2019 and the quarterbacks coach for the next three seasons, working alongside Moore and quarterback Dak Prescott.

Nussmeier brings with him coaching experience of over two decades. He had been the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at five successive schools between 2008 and 2018 when he joined the Cowboys.

He had previous NFL experience composed of brief stints as a player with the New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos, and Indianapolis Colts, and a two-year run as quarterbacks coach of the then-St. Louis Rams from 2006–2007.

The move is unsurprising, but given his relationship with Moore and how well-respected he seems to be, Nussmeier going to Philadelphia is likely bad news for Dallas, even if he isn’t giving away state secrets.
