Originally from Freeport, Illinois. Attended Freeport High School. Played at Illinois State University. Decided to redshirt his first year. As a redshirt freshman, he played in eleven games, totaling twenty two tackles, and 3.5 tackles for loss. During his sophomore season, he played in all fifteen games, totaling fifty one tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks. As a junior, he played in all eleven games, totaling seventy three tackles, which ranked second on the team, four sacks, which was highest on the team, and 8.5 tackles for loss, which was tied for most on the team.
