At one time, it was thought that when Zach Ertz engineered his late-season escape from the Arizona Cardinals, he might "come home'' to Philadelphia.

But Ertz - maybe because of his patience or maybe due to relative disinterest from NFL teams - didn't hook up with anybody for a run to the playoffs.

Instead, now, he's hooked up with a team that is in the playoffs and might be going places.

The Detroit Lions are heading into the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday with very little experience at this level. Is that a reason for them to be signing the veteran free agent tight end?

Maybe, as Ertz was part of the Eagles' Super Bowl-winning team in 2017.

But the vision is likely larger than that for the three-time Pro Bowler, who will of course start out on the practice squad (as is customary now) with plans to potentially elevate him for the NFC Championship Game. ... or the Super Bowl.

This week would require a quick turnaround for Ertz, at 33, to "come off the couch.'' But after being waived on Nov. 30 after spending time on injured reserve, he is apparently now healthy ... while Detroit has some injury issues at the position.

Rookie star Sam LaPorta is playing on a bum knee and No. 2 tight end Brock Wright, sustained an arm injury in the divisional round win against Tampa Bay.

Will Ertz really play with the Lions play at the 49ers at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday? It's a sidebar issue worth watching for Eagles fans.
