MVP to Super Bowl: Can Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Avoid Fate of Falcons Matt Ryan?

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was crowned NFL Most Valuable Player. ... and now attempts to avoid joining a dubious list that includes the Falcons' Matt Ryan.

As we roll toward Super Bowl LVII, we have Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as a centerpiece, just crowned NFL Most Valuable Player. ... and now trying to avoid adding to a weird streak that includes former Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan.

That weird streak? Recently, most of the time the regular-season MVP played in the Super Bowl ... he lost.

As PFT points out: "Mahomes will try to avoid the fate of Tom Brady in 2017, Matt Ryan in 2016, Cam Newton in 2015, Peyton Manning in 2013, Peyton Manning in 2009, Tom Brady in 2007, Shaun Alexander in 2005, Rich Gannon in 2002 and Kurt Warner in 2001, all of whom won the regular-season MVP but lost that season’s Super Bowl.''

Mahomes, who also won MVP in 2018, is the 10th ever multi-time NFL MVP winner. The quarterback did not attend the ceremony to accept the award, as he and the 1.5-point underdog Chiefs prepare for Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Mahomes ran away with the honor, earning 48 of 50 first-place votes; the other two went to Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

This season, Mahomes fought through a high-ankle sprain to set an NFL record of 5,614 total yards in a season plus 41 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He and the Chiefs led the league in terms of points scored per game (29.2), total yards (413.6) and passing yards (297.8).
