GREEN BAY, Wis. – Green Bay Packers safety Adrian Amos is taking a free-agent visit to the Baltimore Ravens, a source told Packer Central on Thursday.

Amos is one of the most reliable safeties in the NFL. In four seasons with Green Bay, he started all 66 games. Not only did he start every game, but he led the defense in snaps each season.

As a team captain in 2022, he set career highs with 102 tackles and six tackles for losses. Focusing only on defense, he was second on the team with 97 tackles. In coverage, he had one interception and five passes defensed – his fewest in both categories since 2017 with the Chicago Bears. But he was Mr. Reliable, almost always in the right spot and consistently one of the top tacklers at his position in the NFL.

Amos, who will turn 30 on April 29, has been taking a wait-and-see approach to free agency in hopes of finding the best fit. Baltimore would be a strong fit, to be sure. That’s where he grew up.

“Yeah, that’s a real thing,” Amos said following the season-ending loss to Detroit when asked if he’d thought about his future. “You’re a family, we’re going to be talking about it coming up. It’s all in God’s hands. Whatever happens, happens. I’m just blessed to be healthy and finish the season.”

A signing is not imminent – subject to change, obviously – and the Packers remain an option.

Amos was worth every penny of the four-year, $36 million contract that he signed in 2019. Including five playoff games, “Smash” started all 71 games in a Packers uniform.

According to Pro Football Focus, 81 safeties played at least 400 snaps on defense in 2022. Amos ranked 19th with a missed-tackle rate of 7.8 percent (eight misses). It was typical Amos from that perspective. For comparison, fellow Packers safety Darnell Savage was 78th with a missed-tackle rate of 18.8 percent (12 misses).

Gauging coverage responsibilities is difficult on most plays but especially so at safety. For what it’s worth, PFF charged Amos with six touchdown passes allowed – tied for the most among safeties – but Sports Info Solutions charged him with only two. He was tied for fifth on the team with seven stuffs (a tackle at or behind the line vs. the run).

During free agency, the Packers re-signed Rudy Ford and added former 49ers player Tavarius Moore. Innis Gaines, who started the Week 18 game against Detroit, and 2022 seventh-round pick Tariq Carpenter will be back for 2023. Special-teams standout Dallin Leavitt remains unsigned.

Baltimore has a quality starting tandem at safety with Marcus Williams, who has 19 interceptions in six seasons, and Kyle Hamilton, its first-round pick last year.

As a consequence of multiple contract restructures by the team, Amos has a 2023 cap charge of almost $8 million even while not under contract.
