Grading the Panthers' Selection of Linebacker DJ Johnson

Our staff gives their thoughts on the Panthers third round pick.

Schuyler Callihan: C

This seems like a bit of a reach to me. I'm not sure why they felt the need to jump up 13 spots to take him, to be honest. Johnson feels like a project and too big of one to take in the third round even with the lack of pass rushers left on the board. However, there is some "boom" potential here due to his freakish athleticism. If he cleans up his technique and adds to his pass rush, this could turn out to be one hell of a find.

Matt Welch: Grade B+

DJ Johnson is freakishly athletic and will provide depth at EDGE for a team looking to create more havoc in opposing backfields. Johnson has reps at linebacker and DL so he’s got versatility. I don’t know if Carolina will give him any looks at TE but he’s shown to have a nose for the end zone on the offensive side of the ball. It’s good to have a guy on the roster who gives you options to get creative if need be.

Tyler Ball: B

The Panthers trading up for some pass-rush help is a positive sign for the future. Johnson can play almost anything on defense making him a great addition to the roster. Shaq Thompson was drafted for the exact same skill sets and has been a huge success. Johnson has solid speed, raw athleticism, and natural instincts - a perfect combo for the Carolina Panthers.

Matt Alquiza: B+

This front office loves their traits guys. Johnson has plus size and speed. He has the potential to be Brian Burns-lite and should compliment him well on the other side of the formation.
