Patriots Release Former Panthers QB Matt Corral

Could Corral return to Carolina?

UPDATE: The Patriots have place Corral on the reserve/left squad list. He has not been released, yet.

The Carolina Panthers waived quarterback Matt Corral in order to make room for the handful of guys the team claimed off waivers. The hope was that Corral would clear and that he would sign back to the Panthers' practice squad. Unfortunately, that's not how things panned out. The New England Patriots scooped him up, putting him on their 53-man roster.

After just a little over a week with the team, Corral is being released, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The Patriots signed Bailey Zappe to it's active roster and cutting ties with Corral was the corresponding move.

"We're happy with the progress that Matt made," Panthers head coach Frank Reich said after the team waived Corral. "As we've talked about really the whole offseason, there's a lot of complexities, a lot of moving parts to putting together a roster. Everybody understands that the sole motivation is to do what's best for the team. We're trying to get as many players on the roster and in that locker room on the 53 and on the practice squad as we can that can help us win this year. Those are tough decisions. I wouldn't mind saying I would love to get Matt back. He's done very well. We'd like to see him continue to progress."

Currently, the Panthers have just two quarterbacks on the roster - Bryce Young and Andy Dalton. Getting Corral back in the building may not be a bad idea.
