Forecasting Cam Newton's return to the Carolina Panthers is now a murkier proposition.

ESPN's Josina Anderson reports Newton is meeting with Dr. Robert Anderson, a renowned foot specialist in Green Bay, Wisc. The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player hasn't played since aggravating a left foot Lisfranc injury during Carolina's 20-14 loss to Tampa Bay on Sept. 12.

Newton was on the sideline during last weekend's 51-13 loss at San Francisco, a defeat that snapped a four-game win streak with Kyle Allen at quarterback. Coach Ron Rivera announced earlier this week that Allen would again start on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. The 49ers rolled up seven sacks of Allen, who threw for 158 yards on 19 of 37 passing with no touchdowns and three interceptions. That defeat -- along with those interceptions -- were the first of his NFL career.

Newton went 50 for 89 during Carolina’s 0-2 start with 572 yards and an interception.

Per Panthers.com, general manager Marty Hurney said: “I spent a long time speaking with Cam this week and he’s done everything he possibly can in his rehab process to get his foot to 100 percent,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point. The next step is for him to go see Dr. Anderson and gather more information.”
