Frank Reich to Hand Over Play-Calling Duties

A major change in Carolina.

A big-time change is happening with the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Frank Reich informed the team this morning that he will be handing over the offensive play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Reich made it known when he took the job that he would call the plays initially but would at some point make the change, handing over the responsibility to Thomas Brown. Brown called some plays in the second half of preseason games and the offense performed well in those possessions.

"I thought he did a great job. It came very easy to him," Reich stated back in August. "He's been doing it. The whole OTAs and training camp when we go two-minute, you know, I'm just having him call everything. He's doing a great job. He's a natural. He really is. Very quick-minded. If you know Thomas, you know he's very decisive and he does call his plays with conviction. I think this is a great experience for him."

This will be a first for both Reich and Brown. In his six years as an NFL head coach, Reich has always called the offensive plays. For Brown, this will be his first opportunity to call the shots at this level. Prior to coming to Carolina, he spent three years with Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams as the running backs coach.
