'He's Got Moxie!': ESPN 'Hiring' Patriots Ex Bill Belichick?
Those with head coaching vacancies appear to be punting on Bill Belichick. Pat McAfee, on the other hand, is rushing toward him.
McAfee, the eponymous host of "The Pat McAfee Show" on ESPN, is throwing his hat into the Belichick ring. He's announcing his intentions to "hire" the former New England Patriots head coach if no NFL team is willing to do so.
“I will make this promise that if Bill Belichick is going to do TV, old Pat McAfee will be in the running to try to get Bill Belichick to join our program,” McAfee promised to co-host AJ Hawk during the Friday edition of his program. "The amount of questions as soon as I see him, that may be the reason he doesn’t want it. But our group of humans’ never-ending questions to Bill Belichick ... who literally knows everything about the NFL ..."
The eight-time Super Bowl champion had a pair of interviews with the Atlanta Falcons, who opted for Raheem Morris instead. Two head coaching spots (Seattle, Washington) remain open but there's no indication that either team plans to reach out to Belichick, who could be weighing television options instead.
While some critics believe that Belichick's eternally stoic nature would perhaps make him an ill fit on the television circuit, his unfiltered knowledge of the game would no doubt grab the attention of viewers. McAfee believes that Belichick is fully capable of letting his guard down, previously doing so when he served as comic relief of sorts on ESPN's "College GameDay" before the Army-Navy Game descended upon Gillette Stadium last December.
"After what we saw on 'College GameDay,' he’s got moxie," McAfee declared. "He’s great on TV. I think we’ll all be incredibly lucky if that’s the case.”
McAfee, an All-Pro punter with the Indianapolis Colts, debuted his show on Westwood One in 2019. His program has been nationally syndicated by the ESPN family networks and has become well-known for his eccentric and headline-grabbing interviews with guests such as New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
