Raiders Have Options at Quarterback

The Las Vegas Raiders are looking to add another quarterback to their roster. They have options on how to do so.

The Las Vegas Raiders have publicly stated they plan on having a quarterback competition this offseason.

In Aidan O’Connell, the Raiders have a talented but young and relatively inexperienced quarterback leading their team. After leading the team to a 5-4 record as their full-time starter, O’Connell entered the offseason fully expecting to have to fight for the starting position again next season.

The Raiders have already signed veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew to a sizable contract. He will either be a dependable backup for the team or the team’s starter in O’Connell’s absence should he beat out O’Connell for the starting position this summer. During his time in the NFL, Minshew has proven he can do both.

While he is not the most glamorous quarterback in the league, Minshew has many games under his belt as both a starter and a reserve and gives the Raiders ample starting experience at the quarterback position.

Still, the Raiders plan to add a third quarterback to their team this offseason. While it is expected the Raiders will bring in an experienced quarterback, they are also in a unique position with eight picks in this year’s NFL Draft. While the Raiders may or may not trade up for a quarterback, they could either stay where they are in the draft and take a quarterback or trade back for additional picks and draft a quality quarterback some time after the first round.

Raiders General Manager Tom Telesco has spent his first offseason at the helm strategically making moves to improve the team’s roster and flexibility in the draft. As it stands, the Raiders don’t have many glaring needs on their roster. This allows them to add to the quarterback position like they would like to do but not be forced to do so via the NFL Draft.

As the Raiders continue to focus on the draft, they will also be looking at the quarterback market to find a third quarterback to add to their roster. While they could be on the hunt for another quarterback with experience, the Raiders could use the draft to find their third and final signal-caller.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
