Report: Tannehill Could be an Option for the Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders have added Gardner Minshew but are still in the market for help at the QB position. Veteran QB Ryan Tannehill could be an option.

The Las Vegas Raiders will spend the offseason letting their quarterbacks battle for the starting position. Aidan O’Connell is the team’s starting quarterback, but that could change if Gardner Minshew outperforms him this offseason.

Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport believes the Raiders, amongst other teams, are a legitimate option to sign veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

“Last year’s 8-9 season leaves the Raiders too far down the draft to grab an elite arm without an expensive trade," Davenport said in a recent article. "And arguing whether Aidan O’Connell or Stidham is the better NFL starter is equal parts depressing and pointless.”

Jon Conahan of Heavy.com also believes the Raiders are a good fit for Tannehill. Conahan points out that the Raiders would improve at the quarterback position if Tannehill were able to remain healthy. When healthy, Tannehill has had a serviceable career as a starting quarterback in the National Football League.

“The Las Vegas Raiders landed Christian Wilkins, another former Miami Dolphins player, this offseason,” Conahan said. “Signing Wilkins was an indication to the fan base that the Raiders plan to compete.

“Factor in Maxx Crosby, Davante Adams, and others, and the Raiders have a chance to be an above-average team if things go right. Adding Tannehill to that mix would be a gamble, but he’s proven that when he’s healthy, he can be a serviceable quarterback in this league.”

The Raiders recently signed Minshew to compete with O’Connell for the starting position. However, the Raiders are still in the market for another quarterback.

After signing Minshew, another quarterback with more starting experience than O’Connell, Conahan believes the Raiders could be the team for a veteran quarterback like Tannehill.

“In the 2021 season, Tannehill’s last full year, he threw for 3,734 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions," Conahan said. "That came after a season that he threw for 3,819 yards and 33 touchdowns.

“The injuries are a concern, but on a cheap deal, Tannehill makes sense for them. If he stays healthy and plays like he did in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the Raiders would be a team to watch out for.”

The Raiders are still in the market for a veteran quarterback to add to their roster. Tannehill makes sense, depending on the Raiders' plans for the NFL Draft, where they could also add a talented yet affordable option at quarterback.

The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit, Mich., on April 25-27, 2024. The Las Vegas Raiders currently have the No. 13 overall pick.
