Rams' Matthew Stafford's Wife Regrets 'Connecting' Comments: 'Worst Thing I've Done!'

Kelly Stafford, wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, apologizes for claiming her husband was struggling to connect with younger teammates

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and his wife Kelly Stafford have made headlines for less-than-flattering reasons over the past week.

On her podcast "The Morning After With Kelly Stafford," Kelly claimed that her husband was having trouble connecting with his younger teammates. Specifically, she noted how the younger players "going straight to their phones" after practice and calling Stafford "sir" threw him for a loop.

“It’s kind of crazy, so Matthew’s been in the league for a long time,” she said. “He’s like, ‘The difference in the locker room has changed so significantly,’ and they have a lot of rookies on their team this year, they’re very young.”

Kelly's comments quickly spread like wildfire, drawing a wide range of reactions from fans and media alike. She clearly heard some of those reactions because in an interview with Local 4 Detroit on Thursday, she referred to her comments as "probably the worst thing I've done when it comes to him."

“I spoke on a topic that I think, it’s relatable, to the fact that it’s hard to relate to someone who is ten years younger than you," Kelly said. "And I do think that’s entirely true. But I’m not in an NFL locker room, I’m not spending every day with these teammates.

“That was tough. I say all the time, probably not the best if your wife’s name is in the media if it’s talking about sports. I felt pretty bad last week,” Kelly added. “I put my foot in my mouth pretty good last week.”

Stafford, 35, is the oldest player on the roster by a decent margin, being three years older than star defensive lineman Aaron Donald. Despite that fact, it's not hard to see why her comments rubbed many the wrong way.

In any case, Stafford and the Rams will hope to put this "story" behind them when they open the regular season on Sept. 10.
