'Is This Who We Are?' Ex-Ravens DE Marcus Spears On Chiefs Super Bowl Parade Shooting
One of the most unimaginable things has happened as the Kansas City Chiefs and fans celebrated another Super Bowl on the streets. One person is confirmed dead and as many as 10-15 others were reportedly injured - some critically - as shots rang out during the team's celebratory parade.
Many teams have come out to express sympathy for the event, including the Baltimore Ravens.
During ESPN's NFL Live coverage of the parade, former Cowboys and Ravens defensive end Marcus Spears - who is a regular on the program - said the incident did not surprise him.
"When I first heard it, you know, what I thought is unfortunately, is this who we are?" Spears said.
"This is who we are. So, now the ever-revolving cycle is going to start. The news outlets will talk about gun control. They'll have politicians from either side to talk about what needs to be done, the activism and what needs to be done...and then we'll have the prayers up."
"It's unfortunate, and all the time it's unfortunate," he continued.
"This is not an isolated incident in our country. But I know what the cycle is going to be, and eventually, we'll go back to everyday scheduled programming.
The problem is, in this situation, when we have to talk about what we are as a country, it's always isolated...the bottom line is that it happens too much in this country."
Spears displayed excitement early in the show to be a part of broadcasting the parade in Kansas City but said his outlook has changed after the shooting.
