Ravens Training Camp: 'The Atmosphere Feels Different' - Lamar Jackson
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is gearing up for his sixth NFL season and has had to learn a new offense while getting comfortable with new receivers.
The Ravens' focus this offseason was to elevate the passing game for Jackson and did so by bringing in offensive coordinator Todd Monken this offseason. Baltimore hopes that Monken's pass-heavy scheme will bring out the best in Jackson and even revamped its receiving corps to give the former MVP all the firepower he needs.
Jackson was made available to reporters after day 1 of Baltimore's training camp and expressed that something feels different about the team.
"I feel more experienced," Jackson told the media. "I'm just glad to be around my guys and coaches. The atmosphere feels different... Our guys have more pep in their step. Ravens always play fast but it's different now."
The Ravens extended Jackson to a lucrative five-year $260 contract this offseason and with it, comes the expectation of winning. Baltimore is hoping Jackson will regain his MVP form following the changes made this offseason after he recorded 33 touchdowns and five rushing touchdowns in the last two seasons.
Comparatively, Jackson registered 36 passing touchdowns and seven rushing during his MVP campaign in 2019.
The pressure is on Jackson to perform in 2023, but he is not sweating it.
"I never thought I had pressure on my shoulders," Jackson said. "I always felt like we had guys who were gonna make things happen, they just need opportunity. Now with coach [Todd] Monken being here, he lets the guys freelance. If we get them the ball in their hands, you should see magic happen."
If everything clicks for Jackson and his teammates under Monken, the Ravens could have one of the top offenses in the NFL in 2023.
