'Elite Route Runner!' Ravens' Monken Scouts OBJ Skills
Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is getting to know all about the skills of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. - and he's liking what he's knowing.
"Odell is an elite route runner, does take pride in that," Monken said. "So I think as we continue to go and move forward, that will continue to build."
Both Monken and Beckham Jr. are both new additions to the Ravens offense this offseason.
On Feb. 14, the Ravens signed Monken to replace former offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Monken was previously the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Georgia, where he helped the Bulldogs win back-to-back National Championships in 2021 and 2022.
Beckham Jr. was a later offseason addition, signing a one-year contract on April 9 reportedly worth up to $18 million. He is now a part of a receiving group with the likes of Mark Andrews, Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman.
“I definitely think he wants to throw the ball,” Beckham Jr. said of Monken. “We've got a lot of talented guys who, I think just finding ways to get the playmakers the ball in their hands and being an explosive offense. I think that’s what stands out the most.''
The three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver missed the entire 2022 NFL season after suffering a torn ACL during Super Bowl LVI the year prior.
This will be the fourth team that Beckham Jr. plays for in the NFL. He began his career with the New York Giants, where he spent five seasons before being traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019. He then was waived by the Browns in 2021, and picked up by the Los Angeles Rams who won the Super Bowl later that season.
Beckham Jr. looks to be part of a revitalized receiving group for star quarterback Lamar Jackson, who signed a five-year extension on draft night.
“I think this will be an explosive offense,'' OBJ said of Monken's plan for Lamar and the rest. "I think that’s the goal, to be explosive.”
