Ex-Saints Coach Elevated To New Position With Buffalo

Ex-Saints coach has a second chance to become an NFL offensive coordinator.

Sean Payton told him leaving the Saints for LSU was a "mistake." After crafting a superb offensive game plan with Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow, passing coordinator Joe Brady walked away with a National Championship and another new gig. "So much for what I know," Payton amusingly told reporters later.

Payton tutored Brady while he was the Saints' offensive assistant from 2017 to 2018. After leading the Tigers' record-setting national championship run, the Carolina Panthers hired him as offensive coordinator. Matt Rhule fired Brady after one season. Then, he landed the quarterbacks coaching position with the Buffalo Bills in 2022. Last week, Sean McDermott elevated him to interim offensive coordinator status following the firing of Ken Dorsey.

Brady has another opportunity to utilize his offensive knowledge as a coordinator with Josh Allen, who has struggled within the Bills' offensive scheme in 2023. Buffalo is in second place in the AFC East, trailing the Miami Dolphins, who are one game ahead with a 6-3 record. Brady should help Josh Allen reduce his 11 interceptions with the league's No. 3-ranked total offense.
