NFL Mock Draft: Seahawks Pick Leonard Williams Successor

The Seattle Seahawks have a host of needs heading into the NFL Draft, and in the latest CBS Sports mock, John Schneider gets some help for the defensive line.

The Seattle Seahawks' defense wasn't as productive in 2023 as some thought heading into the season. As such, the 25th-ranked unit for points allowed per game (23.6) clearly needs some improvement and the upcoming draft is where it could be done.

But where exactly?

Boye Mafe was a revelation in his second season, leading Seattle in sacks (9.0), while defensive end Jaren Reed (7.0) came close behind. Then there's Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon who both showed plenty, as did Dre'Mont Jones and Darrell Taylor.

Murphy II

However, with midseason season pickup Leonard Williams expected to hit free agency, CBS Sports thinks that the Seahawks will select his replacement in the first round in Texas defensive lineman Byron Murphy II.

"Seattle acquired Leonard Williams midseason, but he is slated to hit free agency," CBS Sports writes. "The Seahawks draft Byron Murphy II to account for that loss. Murphy is one of the fastest rising prospects in this class."

Regarded as one of the best run stoppers in college football, Murphy II could be just what the Seahawks need on the defensive line. He played 14 games for the Longhorns this season and registered 8.5 tackles for loss (career high) along with a career-high five sacks.

Murphy's freakish athletic ability coupled with good use of his hands helps him shed blocks, but he also proved his versatility with a pair of touchdowns on offense, something that could definitely appeal to Seattle.

While Murphy II is a little bit raw, he will be able to develop his skills alongside Mafe, Reed, and Taylor during the preseason.

Taking Murphy II won't be a flashy pick for the Seahawks or their fans, but if Williams does indeed leave in free agency, then his selection will fill a need for the defense.
