Steelers Beat Seahawks 32-25 In First Preseason Game: Live Game Log
A new era in Seattle Seahawks football begins (kind of) on Saturday, as someone other than Russell Wilson will be under center to begin a season for the first time since 2012.
Wilson, of course, was traded to the Denver Broncos in March for a variety of draft picks and other players. One of those players is quarterback Drew Lock, who joins fellow signal caller Geno Smith on the current roster. Smith has backed up Wilson since 2019.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll named the team's starter for their preseason opener, picking the veteran 31-year-old Smith over 25-year-old Lock. Smith and Lock have been competing for the starting role since the beginning of the offseason, with Smith holding a slim edge throughout training camp.
Saturday will be the first time Seattle's many rookies take the field, including two players who are leading the youth movement for Seattle. Cornerback Coby Woolen's blazing speed and fellow secondary rookie Tariq Bryant's versatility have reportedly been turning heads at training camp.
“Those two guys, they’ve been doing well," Carroll said. "It’s been totally different, the way they make their plays, the way they play the game, it’s totally different. But, they uniquely have qualities that are really exciting. This is a really nice-looking pair of guys, and we’re very fortunate.”

The Steelers have won the toss and will receive the opening kickoff.
FIRST QUARTER: Seahawks 0, Steelers 14
Anthony McFarland retuned the opening kickoff to the 28 but with a Steelers penalty, the ball will be placed at the 10. It's a double-team block personal foul penalty.
Mitch Trubisky began the game hot for the Steelers with a 9-yard completion to George Pickens on 2nd and 1 from their own 19. The drive was helped by a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty by the Seahawks, for a Pittsburgh first down at their own 43.
Trubisky stayed hot with a 25-yard pass to the Seattle 13 on a 3rd and 6.
TOUCHDOWN STEELERS: Trubisky with a 13-yard pass to Gunner Olszewski for a touchdown. The Nick Sciba extra point is good for a 7-0 Steelers lead with 12:15 remaining in the first quarter. The drive went 90 yards in seven plays and took 2:45 off the clock.
Seattle begins its first drive from its own 26.
Geno Smith begins the game at quarterback for the Seahawks and completes a couple of passes to start the drive, but Seattle goes five plays and 22 yards in 3:22 before they're forced to punt.
Pittsburgh took over from their own 25 after the touchback.
The Steelers take the ball 38 yards in six plays before they have to punt after a 3rd down incomplete Trubisky pass.
Seattle took over from its own nine yard line and went three and out to its own 17 yard line.
The Steelers began their next drive from the Seattle 23 after a 38-yard punt return by Steven Sims.
Mason Rudolph came in at quarterback and was sacked for a loss of 10 yards on 1st and 10 to the Seattle 33. On the next play, McFarland ran up the middle for seven yards.
TOUCHDOWN STEELERS: Rudolph to Pickens for 26 yards for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead. The drive went 23 yards in three plays and took 1:32 off the clock.
The Seahawks took possession at their own 28 after the kickoff, and Geno Smith completed a 25-yard pass to Travis Homer to the Steelers 47. Homer then ran up the middle for 16 yards to the Pittsburgh 28 as time expired in the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Seahawks 10, Steelers 17
Homer began the second quarter as he ended the first, running the ball successfully. Homer ran for 10 yards to the Pittsburgh 18 on 1st and 10. The drive stalled at the Steelers 13.
FIELD GOAL SEAHAWKS: Jason Myers is good from 33 to get Seattle on the board with 12:50 remaining in the first half. The scoring drive went 57 yards in eight plays and took 3:49 off the clock. Steelers lead 14-3.
The Steelers returned the kickoff 16 yards to their own 16. Pittsburgh converts on a 2nd and 7 with a toe-tap catch on the sideline from Rudolph to Pickens.
Pittsburgh kept the drive alive with a large dose of Jaylen Warren on the ground with rushes of 3, 10, and 13 yards during the drive. Rudolph also caught a rhythm through the air with seven completions of less than 15 yards.
Rudolph and the Steelers fall short of the end zone with an incomplete pass at the goalline on 3rd and goal from the 3.
FIELD GOAL STEELERS: Sciba is good from 21 to extend the Pittsburgh lead to 17-3 with 4:28 left in the half. The scoring drive went 81 yards in 17 plays and took 8:22 off the clock.
Geno Smith and the Seahawks take possession at their own 24 and can do no better than four plays and 15 yards before being forced to punt with 2:48 left in the half.
Pittsburgh started at its own 20 after the punt with 2:44 left on the clock but went 3-and-out, taking the half to the 2-minute warning.
Seattle takes possession from its own 39 after the Pittsburgh punt with 1:48 left in the half, and Smith immediately hits wideout Bo Melton for eight yards.
Seattle tried to get in position for a half-ending score.
TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS: Geno Smith runs right for two yards for a touchdown! The Myers extra point is good for a score of 17-10 Steelers. The scoring drive went 61 yards in nine plays and took 1:27 off the clock.
Seattle kicks off and Pittsburgh runs out the clock in the first half.
THIRD QUARTER: Seahawks 17, Steelers 25
Seattle takes the ball to start the half from its own 27.
Drew Lock began the second half at quarterback for the Seahawks, and hit Melton on 1st and 10 for 39 yards to the PIT 34. Seattle marched methodically down the field on the opening drive of the second half to the PIT 3.
TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS: Lock hit Dareke Young in the left flat for a touchdown. Myers' extra point was good for a 17-17 score with 10:37 left in the third quarter. The scoring drive went 73 yards in nine plays and took 4:23 off the clock.
The Steelers took possession from their own 25 after the kickoff. Kenny Pickett came in at quarterback for Pittsburgh.
Pickett's first pass this preseason is good for 11 yards for former Texas A&M Aggie Jace Sternberger. On the next play, Steven Sims took the jet sweep to the left for 38 yards to the SEA 26.
TOUCHDOWN PITTSBURGH: Pickett threw his first touchdown pass for three yards to Warren across the middle. The two-point conversion is good, Pickett to Heyward, for a score of 25-17 Steelers. Pickett went 5-for-5 passing on the drive.
Seattle takes possession back after the kickoff to its own 23.
The Seahawks drive finds legs with DeeJay Dallas with runs of 18, 4, and 6 before Seattle is forced to punt with 2:55 left in the third quarter. The Seahawks drive goes six plays, 29 yards, and takes 3:49 off the clock.
The Dickson punt goes 41 yards to the PIT 7.
Pittsburgh took possession from the seven and went three-and-out, losing five yards in the process. The Nizialek punt went to the SEA 45.
Seattle took back over at its own 45 but quickly crossed midfield with a Lock-to-Fuller pass to the PIT 46. Time expired in the quarter with a 1st and 10 from the PIT 36.
FOURTH QUARTER: Seahawks 25, Steelers 32
TOUCHDOWN SEAHAWKS: Lock completed a short pass to Dallas who ran the rest of the 17 yards to the end zone. The two-point conversion is good, Lock to Homer for a score of 25-25. The scoring drive went 55 yards in five plays and took 2:17 off the clock.
Myers' 61-yard kick is returned by Vaughns to the PIT 31 for 27 yards. The Steelers can do no better than four plays and 18 yards before a Nizialek 51-yard punt into the end zone for a touchback.
Seattle mixed up the run and the pass brilliantly on this drive with three first downs in the first seven plays. But the drive stalled with an incomplete Lock pass on a 3rd and 15 from the PIT 46.
Dickson punted 41 yards to the PIT 5 where it was downed by Blount with 5:59 remaining in the preseason contest. As a reminder, there is no overtime in preseason NFL games.
Pittsburgh gets out of the hole with three consecutive runs from Teague of three, six, and nine yards to the PIT 23 for 3rd and 1. Teague and Pickett continued to get the job done in the air and on the ground to the PIT 42 and a 3rd and 2 and the two-minute warning.
On 3rd and 1 at the SEA 45 Teague ran for no gain. Pittsburgh called a timeout as it considered its next move.
Pittsburgh went for it on fourth down and Pickett was sacked for an eight-yard loss by Seattle's Boye Mafe. The Steelers turn the ball over on downs at their own 47 with 1:17 remaining in the game.
On the next play from scrimmage, Lock was sacked for eight yards and fumbled the ball. The fumble was recovered by Pittsburgh's Tuzar Skipper at the SEA 43.
With 56 seconds left, the Steelers called a timeout with a 2nd and 6 from the SEA 39.
TOUCHDOWN STEELERS: On 2nd and 2 from the SEA 24, Pickett passes to the right side to Vaughns for 24 yards and a touchdown. The Nizialek extra point is good with 3 seconds remaining in the game and the score 32-25 Steelers.
Seattle takes over at its own 15 after the kick and runs one play.
