Kenny Pickett's Attitude Toward Russell Wilson Forced Steelers Trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers were forced to move on after Kenny Pickett's attitude changed.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers were set to have a quarterback competition this offseason between Kenny Pickett and Russell Wilson, but are now moving forward with just Wilson as their starter - trading Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for some NFL Draft picks.

The move came as a surprise to many, and seemingly did not align with the Steelers' beliefs throughout the offseason. Mike Tomlin, Art Rooney II and Omar Khan all said during their sessions with the media that they believed Pickett could beat out any veteran they brought in, and that a competition was the best route at quarterback.

However, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the team had a change of heart when Pickett's attitude about the situation changed.

"[Pickett] communicated to the team he was fine with competing for the job, then went the other way when Wilson was added," Breer reports. "So he's gone."

Pickett was set to compete with a veteran no matter what this summer, whether that was Wilson, Mason Rudolph or another name. But once the team was able to land Wilson for $1.2 million, it appeared unlikely Pickett would win that battle.

Now, he's headed to Philadelphia in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and two seventh-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.
