Steelers Might Have New WR Target

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be able to land another big-name wideout.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are searching for a replacement after trading Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. There's been one name floating around as their top fit, but with a new name hitting the open market, there may be a change to who's coming to the Steel City.

Initially, the Steelers were the top team linked to former Cincinnati Bengal Tyler Boyd. The Pitt star and hometown wideout seemed like the perfect candidate to sign with the Steelers, and has even been in talks with the team about returning to Pittsburgh.

Nothing is imminent, though. The Steelers are battling with the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets about landing Boyd, leaving their chances unknown at this time.

If they have to move on to a different candidate, a new name has appeared that may be another quality fit.

Corey Davis is back in the league after stepping away from football last season. He was recently released by the Jets, being placed on the Reserve/Retired list, with the ability to sign elsewhere if he chooses.

What's the connection? Davis played under Steelers' new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in Tennesse, and during the final year together, caught 65 passes for 984 yards and five touchdowns - all career highs.

Davis is an outside option who would allow Pittsburgh to add a speedy, physical receiver alongside of George Pickens. It wouldn't add too much pressure for the coaching staff to "have to" start him over an emerging rookie - a position they'll likely draft high - and creates added cushion as they move throughout the remainder of the offseason.

In the best-case scenario, he and Smith are able to create magic again, getting Davis back to that 900-yard-plus number with a few scores. In the worst-case scenario, the Steelers have a reliable third receiver who can add depth behind Pickens and an incoming rookie.

The signing makes sense if the Steelers want to approach it. Davis isn't going to be expensive at 29 years old, and even in down years with the New York Jets in 2022 and 2023, he was still a 500-yard receiver with multiple touchdowns.

As a backup plan to Boyd, or even another addition alongside him, Davis makes sense for Pittsburgh - and could be on their radar.
