NFL Fines Steelers LB Kwon Alexander

The Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker was flagged in the preseason opener.

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker Kwon Alexander has been fined $43,709 by the NFL for an unnecessary roughness penalty that occurred during the team's preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Alexander was flagged because of a hit on Buccaneers running back Chase Edmonds. The penalty resulted in a 15-yard move for Tampa Bay, and cost Alexander before the season started.

The NFL's competition committee is putting an emphasis on defenders lowering their helmet this season, and it's expected the fines will remain hefty as they enforce the rule.

Alexander is the first member of the Steelers to be fined this season. A recent study revealed the team is the most fined franchise in the NFL over the last three seasons, which is a trend they'll look to escape in 2023.

Alexander is competing for a starting job against Cole Holcomb and Elandon Roberts. He finished the preseason opener with two tackles.
