Steelers Open to Trading for QB
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking for an answer at the quarterback position, and that could include making a splash via trade this offseason. Team President Art Rooney II said they aren't "closing the door" on the possibility of making a move just yet.
During a sit down with KDKA's Bob Pomepeani, Rooney said the team is open to addressing the quarterback situation however necessary. As they enter the NFL Combine and approach free agency, the team is open to making a trade, if they need to, to acquire a starter-capable passer this offseason.
"As we sit here early February, we’re not closing the door on anything," Rooney said. "We have a lot of evaluations to go through. And we’ll go through all the options and do what we need to do to be better this coming season."
Rooney said during his press conference at the end of the season that the "next step" is for the team to get quality quarterback play. He and head coach Mike Tomlin said they expect Kenny Pickett to take a step forward in year three, but understand the urgency and pressure that is on their first-round draft pick.
Pittsburgh has also expressed interest in retaining Mason Rudolph, but with the veteran hitting the free agency market, it's uncertain if that will happen.
The Steelers have been linked to names like Justin Fields throughout the offseason, and currently, the expected asking price for the Chicago Bears quarterback is a second and third-round pick. If they would need to give up a first-round, Pittsburgh currently holds the 20th pick.
