Steelers Clear Roster Spot

The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived Breiden Fehoko.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have made room on their 53-man roster, waiving defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko with no corresponding move of an activation or signing. So, currently, the Steelers have just 52 men on their active roster.

Fehoko spent the summer with the Steelers but was waived during the team's final roster cuts. He was signed back to the practice squad, where he spent a short time before being signed to the 53-man roster to help replace Cam Heyward.

He played just one game for the Steelers but failed to log a snap. Pittsburgh could consider signing him back to the practice squad after he clears waivers.

The Steelers will likely fill their open roster spot with an inside linebacker after the injury to Kwon Alexander, and practice squad members Mykal Walker and Tariq Carpenter appear to be the top options to sign.

Carpenter appeared in his first NFL game this past week after being called up against the Green Bay Packers. He recorded a tackle on special teams.

Walker is a four-year veteran who started 12 games for the Atlanta Falcons last season, recording 107 tackles. He told reporters he believed he was being considered for elevation and could be nearing signing to the 53-man roster.

Pittsburgh could also use the spot to activate tight end Pat Freiermuth from Injured Reserve. Freiermuth is believed to be nearing a return from his hamstring injury, but the team has yet to open his 21-day return window. That could be the coming move, with an activation as a possibility later in the week.
