Steelers Sign Mitch Trubisky to Contract Extension
PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are extending quarterback Mitch Trubisky, general manager Omar Khan has announced.
Khan announced the move during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, saying the deal is about to be signed by both sides.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport, it’s a two-year extension for the backup QB.
"We feel good about our quarterback room and that was an important piece," Khan said. "Kenny Pickett's our starter and we feel really good about Mitch Trubisky in the role he's in, and he feels good about it."
Trubisky will work as the backup long-term for the Steelers behind Kenny Pickett. Khan raved about Trubisky's mentorship toward Pickett at the NFL Combine and will now be there for the foreseeable future.
Trubisky's extension will likely lower his $10.6 million cap hit this season. He was 2-3 as a starter, throwing for 1,252 yards and four touchdowns to five interceptions during his first season with the team.
The Steelers also signed Mason Rudolph to be their third quarterback, with undrafted free agent Tanner Morgan competing for a spot as well.
