Steelers Scouting QBs in NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers will do their homework on quarterbacks in the NFL Draft.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are hoping their quarterback competition in 2023 is between Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. But head coach Mike Tomlin understands Rudolph is a free agent, and in the NFL, the business side of things could force change.

That change could be who the Steelers put against Pickett this summer to compete as the starter.

Tomlin acknowledged he hopes Rudolph returns to the Steelers in 2024, but knows he will enter free agency, where anything can happen.

"It is," Tomlin said on the hopes of re-signing Rudolph. "But he is a free agent, and it is free agency, and so we’ll see where that leads us."

If he does go elsewhere, the Steelers will look for another option either through free agency and the NFL Draft. And for Tomlin, he's doing his homework on the upcoming class to ensure he doesn't miss an opportunity at the position.

"I always do. You know, I'm a personnel buff," Tomlin said. "I don't think you can be in this profession and not be into personnel, not have knowledge of that play for you, play against you, particularly at the quarterback position. I enjoy it."

The Steelers hold the 20th pick in the NFL Draft and have been mocked to land names like Oregon's Bo Nix and LSU's Jayden Daniels. All Steelers' analyst Nick Martin named a later-round option he believes they could draft without using one of their top picks.
