Steelers Looking at XFL, USFL to Top Off Roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers have one more round of additions to their roster.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers have already agreed to terms with one XFL player in wide receiver Hakeem Butler. Now, they'll look at others from the spring leagues, including the USFL, to round out their 90-man summer roster.

Head coach Mike Tomlin spoke after rookie minicamp and addressed the next round of additions to the Steelers' summer roster. With free agency being limited and the draft behind them, Pittsburgh is turning their attention to the spring league games, looking for players who stand out on the film.

"We just utilize all the ball at our disposal in an effort to acquire talent," Tomlin said. "And we respect what those Leagues are trying to get done in terms of exposing and preparing guys and developing them. And so, we just want to do our part in the ecosystem, if you will."

For XFL players coming to the league, they aren't able to participate until late May. So, for those curious about Butler not being present at rookie minicamp, it's because he's unable to be until OTAs.

The Steelers brought 32 player into rookie minicamp as tryouts. They'll watch the film during the week and sign players as they see fit. Afterward, they'll begin spring ball additions before heading back to practice for OTAs and minicamp.

Pittsburgh is set to take the field again on May 23.
