Ex Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins To Be Cut by Cardinals?

DeAndre Hopkins, former All-Pro wide receiver for the Houston Texans, could be cut by the Cardinals.

HOUSTON — Former Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins could be on the move again for the second time since 2020.

The Arizona Cardinals are already taking trade calls on the three-time All-Pro receiver.

But, if the Cardinals cannot find a trade partner for Hopkins, Arizona may look to release the veteran receiver, According to reports

The most significant issue for Hopkins has not been his on-field production but his contract.

"Some teams think the Cardinals will wind up cutting him," Breer said. "His market is not great right now. Clearly, there was nobody willing to take on the contract and pay the Cardinals’ initial price. I’d think for a team like the Patriots, it would either be no draft pick compensation or way, way down from Arizona’s initial ask and an adjustment to the contract."

The Cardinals are asking for at least a second-round pick and absorb Hopkins' salary cap hit of $19.45 million in 2023 for his services.

Arizona landed Hopkins in a trade with the Texans in March 2020. He has played three seasons with the Cardinals. But due to injuries and a six-game suspension at the start of the 2022 campaign, Hopkins' production has taken a slight decline from his days playing with the Texans.

Houston traded Hopkins and a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to Arizona for running back David Johnson, a 2020 second-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick.

The five-time Pro Bowler has six seasons where he recorded over 1,000 yards in receiving — five came as a member of the Texans. He has recorded 11,298 yards and 71 touchdowns since Houston made him a first-round pick (no. 27 overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots are expected to pursue Hopkins should the Cardinals execute his release.
