Cal McNair: Texans Asking 'A Lot' From Next Franchise QB

With a general idea due to a four-year run with Deshaun Watson, CEO Cal McNair said the Houston Texans will ask a lot from their next franchise quarterback.

HOUSTON — Houston Texans CEO Cal McNair understands the characteristics a player must have in order to become a franchise quarterback.

After all, with the exception of 2021, Deshaun Watson created an on-the-field outline for McNair to follow during his time under center from 2017-2020

Now, the Texans are on the verge of drafting a new franchise quarterback, which according to most projections, will be either Ohio State's C.J. Stroud or Alabama's Bryce Young

And McNair says the Texans will "ask for a lot" out of their new star player under center.

"Winning, of course, is part of it, leading the team, being the face of the franchise," McNair said. "Saying all these things, it’s a lot that we’re asking for from this guy. So, we are looking forward to having all of those things in place. However, we get there, I’m not sure how we’re going to get there, but looking forward to it."

Stroud and Young are the top two players at their position and will have their pick of the latter following the draft selection of the Carolina Panthers — who holds the No. 1 pick.

Regardless of the player left on the draft board, the Texans are in a win-win situation come the second overall pick in late April. But Young has a slight edge over his counterpart.

Young finished his college career at Alabama, throwing for 8,356 yards while completing 65.8 percent of his passes. He also threw for 80 touchdowns and a dozen interceptions.

In three seasons at Ohio State, Stroud completed 69.3 percent of his pass attempts for 8,123 yards. He added 85 touchdowns and a dozen interceptions.

According to ESPN, the Texans had informed each coaching candidate during the interview process they planned on using their top selection in the draft on a quarterback.

Either Stroud or Young would be a substantial fit to replace what Watson and McNair failed to build after four seasons together in Houston.
