Deandre Hopkins Signs: Bad Move for Texans? Or Titans?
All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins recently appeared on an episode of "I Am Athlete” and made a top-goal declaration.
"I want to win a Super Bowl,” D-Hop said.
That’s the right thing to say. He left Houston in the first place aiming to win a title, and didn’t find it in Arizona. Now the Houston Texans ex is on the move again. He has signed with the Tennessee Titans … and we say he’s not destined to find Super Bowl glory there, either.
The Tennessee Titans?! Houston fans are likely disgusted by the move. But D-Hop’s fate, we bet, will be good news for any who are now holding a grudge against the Texans legend.
The Titans aren’t a championship team. They are in some ways the opposite of what Hopkins said he was seeking. … and in that sense, it could be a disaster.
In Hopkins' list of desirable traits in a franchise, three main points arose:
- Stable front-office management
- A QB who "loves the game"
- A great defense
Right off the bat, we see a strike for Tennessee. Ran Carthon is a few months into the general manager position in Tennessee. It’s too early to judge him negatively. But it’s also too early to call the situation “stable.”
Next request, DeAndre? “(I want] a QB who brings everybody on board with him and pushes not just himself, but everybody around him," Hopkins said.
The Titans have a quarterback controversy of sorts featuring a declining journeyman in Ryan Tannehill, a rookie in Will Levi’s who's draft stock fell because of his "concerning personality."
Hopkins' third request was all about “a great defense wins championships.”
Unfortunately for Hopkins, the Titans are lacking on the defensive side of the ball - as was Arizona was. Despite employing playmakers, Tennessee gave up the 10th most yards from scrimmage last season across the league.
A Texans reunion giving rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud another weapon in Hopkins would’ve been nice. But Houston fans can rest easy knowing that the veteran is not headed to greener pastures with the Titans.
And when the Texans face off against Hopkins’ new squad twice next season, it would be a welcome sight - and not an unrealistic one - to watch him walk back to the losing locker room after a Houston victory.
