'Be Yourself!' Texans WR Robert Woods Mentoring Tank Dell

Houston Texans receiver Robert Woods has embraced his veteran leadership role, helping rookie Tank Dell adjust to the NFL.

As the oldest weapon on the Houston Texans’ roster, receiver Robert Woods has embraced his role as a veteran leader. On Thursday, he spoke about receiver Tank Dell’s progress and his relationship with the rookie.

Woods took the opportunity to praise Dell during a press conference after a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins.

“Amazing,” Woods said. “Coming in making plays as a rookie.”

Dell has been a standout throughout camp. Last Saturday, he garnered eight targets for five receptions and 65 yards in a 20-9 win over the New England Patriots. His blazing athleticism has caught the attention of fans and teammates alike.

Woods, though, was impressed with his impact in the run game.

“Being able to be involved in the run game and not only be a pass receiver,” he said. “I think it’s good for our offense and his career.”

Perhaps this aspect of Dell’s game surprised Woods. Listed at 5-8 and 165 pounds, Dell’s pound-for-pound strength likely exceeded expectations. If he is as effective as Woods says, it will go a long way in keeping him on the field during his rookie campaign.

As for advice Woods could pass on to his protégé, he kept it simple.

“Be yourself, be yourself, be yourself,” said Woods. “When I first got in the league I had a receivers coach who said you know how to get open and you’re here for a reason. Being you is good enough.”

Now in his 11th season, Woods is repeating that message to drill confidence into the young receiver.

“You’re going to be really good for us,” he told Dell.

The rookie will have a chance to impress again on Saturday when the Texans host the Dolphins for their second preseason contest.
