'Peek-A-Boo!' Texans Dameon Pierce Reacts to Practice - & Pro Bowl Thoughts

After a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce spoke to reporters about training camp and his goals for 2023.

Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce took to the microphone after Thursday’s joint practice with the Miami Dolphins, giving insight on his progress entering his sophomore season.

Pierce, like the rest of Houston’s healthy starters, is expected to see playing time on Saturday against Miami. He said the day’s practice went well, preparing the two for their matchup. He also claimed it was more intense than their first preseason game, a 20-9 win over the New England Patriots.

“I feel like it was great work,” he started. “Because this is my first one … It is motivating to see how those guys practice, to see how those guys stack days. It gave us an opportunity to see where we’re at against another color.”

He was also asked specifically about Miami’s defense, which is expected to be amongst the best in the league.

“They have a lot of guys who play 2-gap and peek-a-boo,” he said. “But I’ll play peek-a-boo right back.”

Pierce is referring to the disciplined nature of the Dolphins’ linemen, waiting for Pierce to commit to a gap before shedding their block. By being patient, he can buy his linemen time and find an adequate hole. Doing so with more frequency could lead to big numbers and, perhaps, a Pro Bowl selection.

As a rookie, Pierce came out of nowhere to become the Texans’ feature back. The fourth-round pick totaled 220 attempts for 939 yards and four scores. He was named an alternate to the Pro Bowl festivities.

“Of course, the Pro Bowl is something that I feel like every player looks forward to,” Pierce said, before comparing it to social media praise. “I think the only person that would probably top it is having my mom say that I’m the best.”

Houston hopes a big year from Pierce can alleviate pressure on rookie quarterback CJ Stroud, who gets the starting nod on Saturday.
