The Detroit Red Wings announced on Aug. 20 that they acquired forward Sutter Muzzatti from the Nashville Predators in exchange for future considerations.

Muzzatti has since also already signed a two-year, entry-level contract. This latest development for the Red Wings comes amidst an ongoing General Manager search — with Detroit having originally announced a change in their hockey operations leadership on July 15; Steve Yzerman is transitioning from his role as Executive Vice President and General Manager to a senior advisor.

Muzzatti, 23, previously spent his 2025-26 season at the University of Notre Dame and ranked among the team leaders with 13 goals, 19 assists and three power play goals in 37 games.

He was originally selected by the Predators in the fifth round (No. 143 overall) of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.

Muzzatti was also named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team in 2022-23. His father is Jason Muzzatti, who appeared in 62 NHL games between the pipes with the Calgary Flames, Hartford Whalers, New York Rangers and San Jose Sharks from 1993-98.

What Will Sutter Muzzatti Bring to Red Wings Following Acquisition from Predators?

Muzaatti has yet to make his League debut and is expected to continue his development with the Detroit organization. He'll bolster the Red Wings' prospect pool — and will serve as an asset among their development core to do his pre-existing experience with collegiate hockey.

In other words, Muzaatti will be an asset for Detroit due to being a prospect for them who can see the NHL ice sooner rather than later.

He has also previously played for two seasons with the Austin Bruins in the North American Hockey League from 2020-22. In all, Muzzatti tallied 59 points (17-42-59) and 100 penalty minutes in 80 games with the Bruins, also adding one assist in three postseason contests.

The Okemos, Mich. native also scored a goal in his lone appearance with the U.S. National Team Development Program during the 2020-21 campaign. Additionally, Muzzatti skated in two games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the United States Hockey League in 2019-20.

He was a Hobey Baker Memorial Award Nominee in 2023-24.

As previously reported by Detroit Red Wings On SI, Detroit gave up only future considerations to acquire Muzzatti and then immediately signed him to the aforementioned two-year entry-level deal — indicating an eagerness to see him make an instant impact with Detroit.
