John Tortorella Discusses Jack Eichel’s Greatness with Golden Knights

In this story:
The Vegas Golden Knights sent shockwaves through the NHL when they made a stunning decision with just eight games left before the 2025-26 playoffs.
Head coach Bruce Cassidy, who had won the Stanley Cup with them in 2023, was out. For a team built to contend, the timing of the decision caught many off guard.
But inside the organization, the message was clear. This wasn’t about patience, it was about urgency.
With their contender status in jeopardy, Vegas didn’t want to wait and hope things improved. They wanted a spark, and they turned to a coach known for providing exactly that: John Tortorella.
Tortorella’s Track Record Meets a Talented Core in Vegas
Tortorella arrives in Vegas with one of the most decorated resumes for a coach in the sport.
A two-time Jack Adams Award winner (2003–04 and 2016–17), and a Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004, he has built a reputation on accountability, structure, and intensity. Over 24 NHL seasons and more than 1,600 games behind the bench, he ranks among the most experienced coaches in league history.
Now, he steps into a locker room loaded with talent and expectations. In his first press conference as head coach of the Golden Knight, Tortorella was asked about one player who could define this late-season push, Jack Eichel, and he gave an in-depth response on his relationship with Eichel and what stands out about his game:
"He's a beauty. I got a chance with him in Four Nations and now the Olympics. You know what? I'll tell you, up close and watching him at Four Nations every day for a couple weeks, the Olympics, he has turned into a player. I watched him in Buffalo and he was younger and all that, but some of the stuff that I thought he was doing, he's changed. He's a full 200 foot player. You're going to look down that bench for him in every situation in the game," said Tortarella. "It's really weird now I'm coaching him, to get to watch him up close there, he's impressive. And he's got leadership qualities, too. He's not afraid of the challenge. He's not afraid to try to make a difference and is always looking over his shoulder wanting to get back on the ice. So I'm anxious to get to know him better. I really don't know him that well, you know, I was not the head coach of those those tournaments. So, you get to know him at a different level. So I'm anxious to get to know him, and he's going to have to put us on his back. He's going to have to be a big part of this for us to do the things we want to do."

Tortorella’s comments reflect how much Eichel’s game has evolved. Once known primarily for his offensive skill during his time with the Buffalo Sabres, he has grown into a complete player. Coaching Eichel at two international tournaments gave Tortorella a firsthand look at how his game translates in every situation, even under the highest-stakes pressure.
Perhaps most importantly, Tortorella didn’t shy away from expectations. Saying Eichel will have to “put us on his back” isn’t pressure, it’s trust. It shows that Torts believes everything Vegas wants to accomplish in the coming weeks will run through Eichel.
Balancing Urgency With Stability
The challenge now is execution. Taking over a team this late in the season leaves little room for sweeping changes. Systems are already in place. Roles are defined. Chemistry, for better or worse, has been built over months.
Tortorella understands that. He’s already made it clear that he doesn’t plan to overhaul everything. Instead, the focus will be on small adjustments while leaning into the talent already in the room.
That approach matters. A coach known for his intensity could easily disrupt a team by demanding too much too quickly, but in this situation, restraint may be his most valuable tool.
