Whenever Christian McCaffrey misses practice with an injury, it raises red flags. Even due to wildly nonspecific reasons like "tightness". This "tightness" forced him out of practice yesterday and will cause him to miss practice again today. Beyond that, we have no timetable for a return.

The last time he had a tightness of some kind, it was in his calf, and it forced him to miss the vast majority of the 2024 season. Now 30 years old and coming off a season with a career-high 311 carries and 440 total opportunities, injury concerns were already looming heavily for a running back who is no stranger to the injured reserve.

We are hoping to get a more specific update soon, but this is not an injury update that should be overlooked or taken lightly. Especially with it now holding him out again today. CMC comes with a ton of injury risk this season, and this news isn't making us feel any more confident in his ability to stay healthy throughout the 2026 fantasy football season.

Fantasy Impact

RB Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers

We have no interest in drafting CMC anywhere near his ADP this season, and this is a big reason why. Generally, he is being drafted in the top half of the first round as the RB3.

There is way too much risk when it comes to McCaffrey to be spending that kind of draft capital on him. He has a lengthy injury history, and healthy young running backs don't bounce back well from the kind of workload he had last season, let alone an aging, injury-prone back.

Granted, the team says they aren't concerned about his long-term health and this "tightness" isn't anything serious. However, one thing we know about the 49ers is that they lie on an almost constant basis.

We can't trust anything they say, and we've been through this before with McCaffrey. All we can go on is their actions and practice reports, and right now, CMC is unable to practice. This is a situation to monitor closely moving forward.

RB Kaelon Black, San Francisco 49ers

As of now, we'd expect the rookie to be the next man up for CMC. Jordan James is currently sidelined with fractured ribs, and Isaac Guerendo is on the PUP list with a torn pectoral. So that leaves Black as our projected top guy.

Khalil Herbert, Patrick Taylor Jr, and Sincere McCormick could also be in the mix. Still, we would put our chips on the rookie out of that group. Hopefully, McCaffrey and James get healthy, and none of this is a concern by Week 1, but prepare for the worst and hope for the best with this backfield.
