The injury to New York Jets WR1 Garrett Wilson has brought forth some interesting potential WR plays in fantasy football within the organization. These players are Jets WRs John Metchie III and Adonai Mitchell. Here is a breakdown on who to play between the two this week in fantasy football.

John Metchie III

The former 2022 second-round pick, WR  John Metchie III is in the midst of having the best stretch of his career. In his last two games for the New York Jets, he has combined for nine receptions on 10 targets for 110 receiving yards and two TDs. His best of the two games in terms of production was in in latest game against the Baltimore Ravens in week 12. In the contest, he had six receptions for 65 receiving yards and a TD. He will look to build off this encouraging outing when he and the rest of the Jets take on the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday.

The Falcons, for the majority of the season, have had one of the best secondaries in the NFL. Overall in the year, they are allowing the eighth fewest passing yards per game–190.4. However, in their last three games, they are allowing the third most yards per game in the NFL–276.3. Over this stretch, WR1s of opposing teams in two out of three gams have had 70 or more receiving yards. This includes WR1 Tetairoa McMillan for the Carolina Panthers, who had eight receptions for 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns against them.

Adonai Mitchell

Adonai Mitchell has yet to make a major impact in the Jets' passing game since joining them via trade–he was dealt in a deal that sent Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts—but there have been promising signs in his time on the field as a Jet. One of the main things that anyone who took a chance on adding Mitchell off the fantasy waiver wire can hold on to is his target total. In his two games with New York, he has combined for just three receptions for 52 yards. In that, however, he has garnered 13 targets. This total is the highest out of any pass catcher on the team through the last two games.

As mentioned above, the Falcons have struggled to defend the pass of late. This led to some solid production from opposing teams’ WR2s. In the last three weeks, two of the opposing teams’ WR2s against Atlanta had over 80  receiving yards and a touchdown.

Final Verdict

When it comes to who should start between Mitchell and Metchie III in week 13 in fantasy football, Metchie III should sit, and Mitchell should start. The main reason for this is the target total of Mitchell and him being more of a serious deep threat than Metchie III. Five of Micthell’s targets over the last two games have been of 20 yards or longer, while Metchie III only has one. The Falcons, in their past two games, have been vulnerable to the deep ball. In their last three games, they have given up a combined 13 receptions of over 20 yards to opposing pass catchers. This feels like an area where Mitchell can excel on Sunday.
