This Potential MLB Trade Elevates the Fantasy Baseball Upside Masataka Yoshida

Masataka Yoshida lacks playing time, but if he is traded to a team like the Giants, he may become very usable in fantasy baseball.

The Boston Red Sox are in a not-so-bad situation regarding their outfield. The position is crowded and will for sure cause a stir in trade rumors. At the same time, fans debate whether the Red Sox will trade Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, or Jarren Duran, we focus on their Japanese import, Masataka Yoshida. If the price is right, a trade may get done, and in this scenario, we zero in on the San Francisco Giants.

Fantasy Baseball Impact

Yoshida was not drafted in the top 150 outfielders in 2026 fantasy baseball. That is because Yoshida lacks opportunities. He sits on the Red Sox bench, and dating back to 2025, Yoshida has only earned 205 plate appearances. That, however, does not mean that Yoshida is non-productive.

In 2025, Yoshida batted a moderate .266 and .280 in the year prior. His bat is quality, and with a full-time playing opportunity, Yoshida very well can be fantasy baseball viable. He is not a world-beater, but he could be a quality UTIL fill-in.

If the Giants were to trade for Yoshida, he would add another quality bat to their lineup, and he would likely start more games than not. Yoshida will look to play a combination of DH and outfield. Left field, his main position, is commanded by Heliot Ramos, but the position is flexible. Yoshida can move around. All in all, Yoshida will play baseball. That makes him worth a pick-up in fantasy baseball.

Mock Trade Details

Giants Get:

  • OF/DH, Masataka Yoshida
  • Cash Considerations

Red Sox Get:

  • 1B/3B, Casey Schmitt
  • Future Prospect

Why the Giants Accept the Trade

The Giants are looking for improved hitting, and Yoshida may provide that. The Giants lack a ton of depth and reliability, and under young manager Tony Vitello, this team will not quit, despite low expectations this season. If they can snag Yoshida cheaply, why not do it for a net positive at low cost?

Currently, Schmitt plays first base, but that is not a place where he is elite, nor will he be missed all that much. The Giants will slide in Jerar Encarnacion, maintain Matt Chapman to dominate at 3rd base, and add key outfield depth with good hitting upside via Yoshida: supply and demand.

Why the Red Sox Accept the Trade

The Red Sox have a surplus in the outfield. That is quite obvious, where a .280 batter like Yoshida is forced to sit on the bench. In this deal, the Red Sox can make a low-risk trade by gaining a utility corner infielder to back up average assets in Caleb Durbin and Willson Contreras. To pay Yoshida $18 million AAV to sit on the bench is not smart, so they will flip him at that low risk we speak of.
