Arthur Fils Wins First Masters Title at Cincinnati Open

Arthur Fils takes home his first-ever Masters 1000 title by winning the 2026 Cincinnati Open.

On Sunday, August 24th, Arthur Fils won his first ATP Masters 1000 tournament at the Cincinnati Open. The French player faced American Frances Tiafoe, making it the first Masters tournament where two Black men’s singles players faced one another in the final.

Fils won the first set pretty handily 6-3, but Tiafoe had a major comeback in the second set and only lost one game before taking it. The 22-year-old astonished the stadium by winning the third and final set with a bagel (6-0).

Fils’ win makes him only the third Black man to win a Masters 1000 title. The most recent is Ben Shelton, who won back-to-back Canadian Open titles in 2025 and this year. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was the first Black man to achieve the feat by winning the Paris Masters in 2008.

Upon winning, Fils said, “Very Happy with that. It’s been a tough last year. I didn’t play the French Open. I lost early in Washington. People think that I’m done, but here we are. I got the title.”

Past ATP 500 Titles

Before his win at the Cincinnati Open, Fils took home three ATP 500 titles. His first was a hard-fought three-set match against Alexander Zverev (6–3, 3–6, 7–6(7–1)) at the 2024 Hamburg Open. His second was a few months later at the Japan Open, where he defeated Ugo Humbert also in three sets (5–7, 7–6(8–6), 6–3).

Earlier this year, Fils won his third ATP 500 title at the Barcelona Open. He defeated Andrey Rublev in two impressive sets (6–2, 7–6(7–2)).

Fils’ US Open Chances

Following his landmark win at Cincinnati, many are wondering what the chances are that Arthur Fils could take home his first Grand Slam title as well. He is currently seeded 10th for the tournament, riding a high, and faces a field without Jannik Sinner and a newly recovered Carlos Alcaraz.

Fils has only played at the US Open twice before, exiting both times in the second round. In 2023, he defeated Tallon Griekspoor in the first round but then lost to Matteo Arnaldi in five arduous sets. The following year, he defeated Learner Tien in four sets but then lost in the second round to Gabriel Diallo in four sets as well.

With the US Open starting this week, Fils is entirely focused on resting his hip and getting ready for Grand Slam play. In the post-match interview, he said, “You just have to stay positive and find a way to make it work. Being positive is going to help me in the next weeks in the US Open.”
