Jannik Sinner Withdraws From US Open Due to Ongoing Knee Injury

Jannik Sinner, tennis’s top-ranked player, announced his withdrawal from the US Open on Friday, August 21st. Following his win at Wimbledon, Sinner’s status had been uncertain as he recovered from a persistent right knee injury.
Sinner defended his Wimbledon title in his last match against Alexander Zverev but has been sidelined since. His injury forced him to miss the National Bank Open and Cincinnati Open while he received care in Milan.
Sinner Explains His Decision
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year,” Sinner stated on Instagram. “We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.”
“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”
Sinner’s Season Shows Ups and Downs
Sinner holds a match record of 44-3 in 2026 and has taken five major tournament titles, along with his recent success at Wimbledon. He has continued the impressive output that propelled him to the world’s top spot, but has experienced some setbacks along the way.
Heat conditions at the French Open affected the Italian’s play, leading to physical collapse and a loss against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Sinner stepped away from tournament play until Wimbledon, where he returned to form and won his fifth career Grand Slam title.
Injuries Among Other US Open Competitors
Withdrawals and other injuries have continued to arise as the tournament approaches. Sinner is the twelfth player to pull out of the tournament since the initial roster was announced.
Sinner’s closest rival, No. 2-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, had been sidelined for four months, but announced on Thursday that he will return to the US Open.
Effects on the Tournament
Following Sinner’s withdrawal, Alexander Zverev will take the top seed in August. Sinner’s worldwide top ranking won’t be at risk despite his absence, as he is currently over 5,000 points ahead of both Zverev and Alcaraz.
Alcaraz and other top-ranked players like Djokovic gain a small benefit from Sinner’s withdrawal. The reshuffled seed order means these heavy hitters won’t face each other until later rounds, helping their chances in some early matches.
The US Open main draw will start on August 30th.
