DiJonai Carrington’s ‘8/23’ Warning Brutally Backfires vs Caitlin Clark, Fever

One of several things that Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington posted on social media after getting ejected from her team's August 8 game against the Indiana Fever was, "8/23 😁".

This was a reference to the Fever and the Sky facing off again on August 23, and seemed to be Carrington's way of warning the league that she was going to get revenge in one form or another (she was ejected from that game because of a flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham, which prompted her to make a post on Threads that read, "WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever" after being sent to the locker room) when this rematch arrived.

That August 23 game took place last night. The Fever won the game by 23 points, and Caitlin Clark (whom Carrington was guarding for much of the game) made eight three-pointers in the win.

Therefore, Carrington's "8/23" post backfired in a brutal and somewhat hilarious fashion, especially given the history between Carrington and Clark.

This history manifested on the court during Sunday's game. Clark drained one of eight three-pointers over Carrington, who was guarding her, and Carrington tried to respond by bumping Clark in the shoulder as the two returned to the other side of the court.

Clark brushed it off by waving her hand dismissively toward Carrington. Clark also clearly got the last laugh, given her team's blowout victory and her own fantastic performance, which included the aforementioned eight three-pointers, 37 points, and 10 assists.

DiJonai Carrington Might Need to Pick Her Battles Better

There's no way of knowing whether Carrington's social media post gave the Fever an extra edge for Sunday's game. There's no doubt that they were made aware of it, if only because the aforementioned "white privilege" post she made after the game was the most discussed thing in sports for several days after it happened.

But if Carrington is to make a post that seems to be a warning about an upcoming game, she better be prepared to back it up when that game arrives. And not only did her Sky squad clearly not have enough firepower to compete with the Fever on Sunday, but Carrington (who finished the game with seven points in 18 minutes) didn't have the individual firepower to compete with Clark.

Carrington is a fiery individual, and that isn't going to change anytime soon. But she might want to pick her battles better—or at least not post them publicly on social media—so that she doesn't have to then deal with the receipts.
