The Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder helped bring the Olympics to London when the city was selected to host the event in 2005. He made head coach Stuart Pearce's top 35 but failed to make the final 18.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Beckham stated his disappointment with the snub.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me, so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," the 37-year-old Beckham said Thursday. "Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."
